DESCRIPTION:Make It Awkward: Strategies for Responding to Discriminatory Comments – Special Guest Facilitated Workshop!\nDate: Friday\, October 16th\, 2026 \nTime: 1:00-2:30pm (AT) / 12:00-1:30pm (ET) / 9:00-10:30am (PT) \nRegistration link \nWorkshop Description: \n\n\nThe Centre is excited to welcome Dr. Siara Isaac (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne\, Switzerland) to deliver a workshop that has been facilitated over 100 times across seven countries: Make It Awkward: Strategies for Responding to Discriminatory Comments. \nYou know that moment when someone says something biased that you struggle to know how to respond to? And then the moment is gone and you didn’t say anything? \nWhile most people believe they will call out prejudice when they encounter it\, in practice\, fewer than 50% actually do (Swim & Hyers\, 1999). However\, the effectiveness and the benefits of speaking up against prejudice are well documented (Czopp et al.\, 2006; Gervais\, Hillard\, & Vescio\, 2010; Rasinski & Czopp\, 2010; Rasinski\, Geers\, & Czopp\, 2013)\, and it is encouraging to note that confronting discriminatory comments is a skill that can be improved with practice (Lamb\, Bigler\, Liben\, & Green\, 2009). \nThis workshop offers participants a set of eight conversation‐closing responses to discriminatory comments\, and a three‐level scaffolded opportunity to practice speaking up. The use of triadic role plays provides participants with immediate\, low-stakes feedback on their intervention. \nBy the end of this Workshop\, you will be able to: \n\nidentify prejudiced and biased comments with students and colleagues;\npractice speaking up in moments of discrimination; and\,\nfeel more empowered to respond when confronted with prejudices or biased statements.\n\nThis Workshop will utilize Miro\, a collaborative online platform\, for activities. While Miro is compatible with all devices\, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer (rather than a mobile phone or tablet) for easier engagement. \nNote: This 90-minutes session includes a 60-minute interactive workshop + a 30-minute optional (but encouraged) reflective conversation and Q&A. \nGuest Facilitator Bio: \nSiara Isaac\, PhD\, is the coordinator of the pedagogical advisors’ team at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Her research interests focus on the development of engineering students’ transversal skills (such as equitable collaboration\, emotional self-management\, and reflection) and fostering epistemic agency to improve students’ abilities for evaluating knowledge and navigating uncertainty. She contributes to teaching and teaching practices by designing and leading courses\, workshops\, and interventions that create experiential opportunities for participants to improve their skills. Originally trained as a chemist with a PhD in educational research from Lancaster University\, she has worked in higher education in Canada\, China\, and France.

DESCRIPTION:An Open Love Letter: Reflections on Collaborative Writing – with Ty’Kara Turner\, Kat Little\, and Elizabeth Groeneveld\nDate: Tuesday\, October 6th\, 2026  \nTime: 2:00-3:00pm (AT) / 1:00-2:00pm (ET) / 10:00-11:00am (PT) \nRegistration link \nSoTL Speaker Session Description: \nIn this presentation\, Ty’Kara\, Kat\, and Liz share their reflections on the process of collaboratively writing an “open love letter to graduate students in difficult times” as part of a summer Independent Study class. This “open love letter” is an act of care and rebellion that offers graduate students words of affirmation. As students\, professors\, friends\, and thinkers at various stages of our academic and personal journeys\, we hold concern about how our current time restricts what is possible or even feels safe to imagine in academia. We offer this letter as a gesture of care\, support\, advocacy\, solidarity\, and truth-telling. Drawing on the scholarship of Sara Ahmed\, Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba\, and Eve Tuck\, this work is created through a method of feminist bricolage through a summer semester of writing with each other. We close with a reflection on how we adapted and circulated this collaborative writing piece for a different audience following a violent event on our campus. \nSoTL Speakers’ Bios: \nTy’Kara Turner (she/they) is an English PhD student concentrating in Rhetoric\, Writing\, and Discourse Studies\, and Literary and Cultural Studies. Ty’Kara is currently exploring Black Zine Culture for her dissertation. She is originally from Hanover County\, which rests in the land of the Powhatan Confederacy. \nKat Little (she/they) is a graduate student at Old Dominion University pursuing a Master’s in Humanities and a certificate in Women’s Studies. Their research centers on Queer Game Studies and Feminist Technologies. Her most recent research focuses on the impact virtual reality and related technologies has on gender expression and identity. She is originally from Marion\, Virginia\, a small town which resides in the Blue Ridge\, Highlands of Southwest Virginia\, and the homelands of the Cherokee and Shawnee peoples. \nElizabeth Groeneveld (she/they) is a Professor and Department Chair of Women’s and Gender Studies at Old Dominion University. Her publications include Making Feminist Media: Third-Wave Magazines on the Cusp of the Digital Age and Lesbian Porn Magazines and the Sex Wars: Reimagining Sex\, Power\, and Identity. She is originally from the Michi Saagiig Anishnaabeg territory covered by the Williams Treaties\, an area now known as Campbellcroft\, Ontario. \n

They argue that an old paradigm viewed feedback as simply a transmission of comments from teacher to student but ask us to embody a new feedback paradigm that prioritizes dialogue and interaction between teachers and students. Using this vision of feedback\, in this workshop\, we challenge our assumptions about feedback and redesign this integral part of formative and summative assessment to encourage student engagement\, sense-making\, and uptake. By the end of this CTEI Workshop\, you will be able to:    \n\nCreate spaces for meaningful formative and summative feedback;  \n\n\nDesign meaningful feedback mechanisms in different modalities; and\,  \n\n\nAssess the effectiveness of different feedback strategies for your teaching context.\n\nNote: This workshop includes a 60-minute interactive workshop + a 30-minute optional (but encouraged) reflective conversation and Q&A.

We will examine both the developing policies around GenAI use for educators\, including those for disclosure statements and the potential unspoken costs or benefits as well as assumptions that accompany disclosure. The following questions will be addressed in the session: \n\nWe ask faculty to model AI transparency\, but what\, if any\, are the costs (or benefits) of this transparency?\nHow do conceptions of identity impact faculty members practices with respect to acknowledging AI use across domains of faculty practice (development of curriculum\, instructional planning and delivery\, provision of feedback)?\nHow do policies and faculty development initiatives promote or inhibit transparency in AI use among faculty?

DESCRIPTION:GenAI and Identity: Developing a Relational Model – with Dr. Kate Cassidy\, Dr. Cindy Tekobbe\, and Sarena Johnson (PhD candidate OISE)\nDate: Monday\, July 6th\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00-3:30pm (AT) / 1:00-2:30pm (ET) / 10:00-11:30am (PT) \nRegistration link \nPanel Description: \n\n\nConversations around GenAI use in the classroom\, in assessments\, and in instruction have often been distilled into two absolutist notions of good and evil\, missing opportunities to expand upon and embrace notions of impacts on identity and nuanced ways of imagining GenAI as a tool and cultural phenomenon. In an effort to surface nuance\, conflation\, and positive contradiction – in other words the human complexity of working with GenAI – this panel will be an opportunity for people to listen in on a conversation with educators from various backgrounds anchored by Indigenous scholars working through an identity exercise and reflecting on their own work with and around GenAI.

The current iteration brings together educational/curriculum/faculty/instructional developers and instructors from across Canada and the US to explore and reflect on narratives of education in films\, television\, short stories\, and novels. These works may speak to us as learners\, educators\, developers\, researchers\, artists\, and/or simply as humans.  \nFor Summer 2026\, the Fictional Classrooms community will be discussing  Moo (1995) by Jane Smiley (novel):  \n\nPart One – June 22 \nParts Two and Three – July 20\nParts Four and Five – August 17\n\nThe synopsis: \nIn this darkly satirical send-up of academia and the Midwest\, we are introduced to Moo University\, a distinguished institution devoted to the study of agriculture. Sarah Gibbons (UofGuelph) and Tommy Mayberry (Yorkville + TFS) \nWorkshop Description and Learning Outcomes: \nResearch shows that graduate students view feedback from their supervisors and committee members as critical to their successes with theses and dissertations—and not just with the content they are writing about\, but with the actual writing and processes of writing and/as thinking as well. However\, providing effective\, relational\, and human-centred feedback on thesis and dissertation projects\, especially in our current moment of ongoing\, compounding global polycrises\, can be a challenging\, time-consuming\, and even frustrating process for faculty. \nDrawing on research from writing studies\, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)\, and the facilitators’ own lived experiences as dissertators who’ve become writing pedagogues and faculty developers\, this workshop is designed for faculty and instructors to: \n\ndiscuss strategies for providing effective\, relational\, human-centred and humanized feedback on their Graduate students’ thesis and dissertation projects;\nidentify approaches and tools that graduate students (and faculty and instructors!) can use to address feedback as they write\, revise\, and polish their theses and dissertations;\nbegin sharing ideas\, successes\, and failures with instructional peers on practices for thesis and dissertation pedagogies;\nre-envision taken-for-granted assumptions and traditions of the supervisor-supervisee dyad to decolonize relationships in thesis and dissertation pedagogies and approaches; and\nstretch yourself toward embodying sustainable\, responsible\, and accountable thesis and dissertation pedagogy processes and practices.\n\nThis workshop is open both to new faculty and instructors as well as to seasoned supervisors and committee members to come together as we collectively work toward embodying and sustaining effective thesis and dissertation pedagogy processes at Yorkville and Toronto Film School.
