The current iteration brings together educational/curriculum/faculty/instructional developers and instructors from across Canada and the US to explore and reflect on narratives of education in films\, television\, short stories\, and novels. DESCRIPTION:An Open Love Letter: Reflections on Collaborative Writing – with Ty’Kara Turner\, Kat Little\, and Elizabeth Groeneveld\nDate: Tuesday\, October 6th\, 2026  \nTime: 2:00-3:00pm (AT) / 1:00-2:00pm (ET) / 10:00-11:00am (PT) \nRegistration link \nSoTL Speaker Session Description: \nIn this presentation\, Ty’Kara\, Kat\, and Liz share their reflections on the process of collaboratively writing an “open love letter to graduate students in difficult times” as part of a summer Independent Study class. This “open love letter” is an act of care and rebellion that offers graduate students words of affirmation. As students\, professors\, friends\, and thinkers at various stages of our academic and personal journeys\, we hold concern about how our current time restricts what is possible or even feels safe to imagine in academia. We offer this letter as a gesture of care\, support\, advocacy\, solidarity\, and truth-telling. Drawing on the scholarship of Sara Ahmed\, Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba\, and Eve Tuck\, this work is created through a method of feminist bricolage through a summer semester of writing with each other. We close with a reflection on how we adapted and circulated this collaborative writing piece for a different audience following a violent event on our campus. \nSoTL Speakers’ Bios: \nTy’Kara Turner (she/they) is an English PhD student concentrating in Rhetoric\, Writing\, and Discourse Studies\, and Literary and Cultural Studies. Ty’Kara is currently exploring Black Zine Culture for her dissertation. She is originally from Hanover County\, which rests in the land of the Powhatan Confederacy. \nKat Little (she/they) is a graduate student at Old Dominion University pursuing a Master’s in Humanities and a certificate in Women’s Studies. Their research centers on Queer Game Studies and Feminist Technologies. Her most recent research focuses on the impact virtual reality and related technologies has on gender expression and identity. She is originally from Marion\, Virginia\, a small town which resides in the Blue Ridge\, Highlands of Southwest Virginia\, and the homelands of the Cherokee and Shawnee peoples. \nElizabeth Groeneveld (she/they) is a Professor and Department Chair of Women’s and Gender Studies at Old Dominion University. Her publications include Making Feminist Media: Third-Wave Magazines on the Cusp of the Digital Age and Lesbian Porn Magazines and the Sex Wars: Reimagining Sex\, Power\, and Identity. She is originally from the Michi Saagiig Anishnaabeg territory covered by the Williams Treaties\, an area now known as Campbellcroft\, Ontario. \n

DESCRIPTION:Make It Awkward: Strategies for Responding to Discriminatory Comments – Special Guest Facilitated Workshop!\nDate: Friday\, October 16th\, 2026 \nTime: 1:00-2:30pm (AT) / 12:00-1:30pm (ET) / 9:00-10:30am (PT) \nRegistration link \nWorkshop Description: \n\n\nThe Centre is excited to welcome Dr. Siara Isaac (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne\, Switzerland) to deliver a workshop that has been facilitated over 100 times across seven countries: Make It Awkward: Strategies for Responding to Discriminatory Comments. \nYou know that moment when someone says something biased that you struggle to know how to respond to? And then the moment is gone and you didn’t say anything? \nWhile most people believe they will call out prejudice when they encounter it\, in practice\, fewer than 50% actually do (Swim & Hyers\, 1999). However\, the effectiveness and the benefits of speaking up against prejudice are well documented (Czopp et al.\, 2006; Gervais\, Hillard\, & Vescio\, 2010; Rasinski & Czopp\, 2010; Rasinski\, Geers\, & Czopp\, 2013)\, and it is encouraging to note that confronting discriminatory comments is a skill that can be improved with practice (Lamb\, Bigler\, Liben\, & Green\, 2009). \nThis workshop offers participants a set of eight conversation‐closing responses to discriminatory comments\, and a three‐level scaffolded opportunity to practice speaking up. The use of triadic role plays provides participants with immediate\, low-stakes feedback on their intervention. \nBy the end of this Workshop\, you will be able to: \n\nidentify prejudiced and biased comments with students and colleagues;\npractice speaking up in moments of discrimination; and\,\nfeel more empowered to respond when confronted with prejudices or biased statements.\n\nThis Workshop will utilize Miro\, a collaborative online platform\, for activities. While Miro is compatible with all devices\, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer (rather than a mobile phone or tablet) for easier engagement. \nNote: This 90-minutes session includes a 60-minute interactive workshop + a 30-minute optional (but encouraged) reflective conversation and Q&A. \nGuest Facilitator Bio: \nSiara Isaac\, PhD\, is the coordinator of the pedagogical advisors’ team at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Her research interests focus on the development of engineering students’ transversal skills (such as equitable collaboration\, emotional self-management\, and reflection) and fostering epistemic agency to improve students’ abilities for evaluating knowledge and navigating uncertainty. She contributes to teaching and teaching practices by designing and leading courses\, workshops\, and interventions that create experiential opportunities for participants to improve their skills. Originally trained as a chemist with a PhD in educational research from Lancaster University\, she has worked in higher education in Canada\, China\, and France.

But what if we could work differently? Editing Generously borrows from Kathleen Fitzpatrick’s books\, Generous Thinking and Leading Generously\, and Lee Skallerup Bessette\, PhD\, in this session\, will explain the concept and provide a roadmap to how to create your own publishing opportunities which are generative\, generous\, and focuses on community and support. Due to the pressures of modern academia\, we have forgotten that publishing is supposed to be a way to share and learn from our intellectual community. In this session\, we will explore ways to put that purpose back to the forefront.   \nSoTL Speaker’s Bio: \nLee Skallerup Bessette\, PhD\, is the Assistant Director for Digital Learning at the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) at Georgetown University. She is also the editor of The National Teaching and Learning Forum.
