SUMMARY:Developing a Classroom Code of Ethics: Early Semester Work for Preparing the Class for Learning and Participation - with Renée Nichole Ferguson\, Angelina LoBianco\, and Gabriela Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Developing a Classroom Code of Ethics: Early Semester Work for Preparing the Class for Learning and Participation – with Renée Nichole Ferguson\, Angelina LoBianco\, and Gabriela Robinson\n*Due to technical difficulties day-of with this session on April 30th\, we are very pleased to be able to reschedule this talk with Renée\, Angelina\, and Gabriela for May 20th – see new details below!* \nDate: Wednesday\, May 20th\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00-3:00pm (AT) / 1:00-2:00pm (ET) / 10:00-11:00am (PT) \nRegistration link \nSoTL Speaker Session Description: \nIn social work education\, one way ethics is taught is through ethical codes and solving dilemmas\, shaped by traditions that treat conflict as something to manage or analyze at a distance. This SoTL project starts from a different premise: that ethical issues are fundamentally conflicts between values\, relationships\, institutions\, and harness real-world conditions. We begin from Black feminist pedagogy and methodology and use this project to test what it means to take them seriously in both teaching and the study of teaching and learning. Developed in a social work course at Toronto Metropolitan University\, we analyzed student assignments through a students-as-partners model\, asking what becomes visible in students’ thinking\, what remains difficult to articulate\, and what becomes possible within the classroom. \nAs part of the session\, participants will learn about Black feminist pedagogy and its significance in the classroom; learn about ways to develop a SoTL project and work closely with student partners; and apply takeaways from the project to draft a code of ethics that will support them in setting a supportive tone for the class at the start of the year. \nSoTL Speakers’ Bios: \nRenée Nichole Ferguson\, PhD (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in Social Work at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her teaching and research draw on Black feminist methodology and are shaped by her professional practice in health and social service settings in Canada. \nAngelina LoBianco\, BSW\, RSW (she/her) is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University and a member of the research team contributing to the project. She is currently working with communities in non-profit housing and co-operative housing. As a recent graduate of the BSW program\, Angelina is thrilled to have the opportunity to explore students’ conceptions of conflict\, accountability\, and peace\, as well as the gaps in social work education. She also hopes to apply her learnings to her work with long-standing aging communities. \nGabriela Robinson (she/her) is a soon-to-be graduate of the BSW program at Toronto Metropolitan University and a member of the research team contributing to the project. Gabriela is honoured to implement her knowledge and skills to better understand students’ perspectives on conflict\, accountability\, and peace. She is particularly interested in how these concepts can inform compassionate practices and support the well-being of individuals in both clinical\, community-based settings\, and academics. She also hopes this experience will support her in expanding her career in research and deepening her engagement with meaningful practice.

SUMMARY:Dissertation Pedagogies
DESCRIPTION:Dissertation Pedagogies\nDate: Tuesday\, May 26th\, 2026 \nTime: 8:00-9:30pm (AT) / 7:00-8:30pm (ET) / 4:00-5:30pm (PT) \nRegistration link \nFacilitated by Drs. Sarah Gibbons (UofGuelph) and Tommy Mayberry (Yorkville + TFS) \nWorkshop Description and Learning Outcomes: \nResearch shows that graduate students view feedback from their supervisors and committee members as critical to their successes with theses and dissertations—and not just with the content they are writing about\, but with the actual writing and processes of writing and/as thinking as well. However\, providing effective\, relational\, and human-centred feedback on thesis and dissertation projects\, especially in our current moment of ongoing\, compounding global polycrises\, can be a challenging\, time-consuming\, and even frustrating process for faculty. \nDrawing on research from writing studies\, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)\, and the facilitators’ own lived experiences as dissertators who’ve become writing pedagogues and faculty developers\, this workshop is designed for faculty and instructors to: \n\ndiscuss strategies for providing effective\, relational\, human-centred and humanized feedback on their Graduate students’ thesis and dissertation projects;\nidentify approaches and tools that graduate students (and faculty and instructors!) can use to address feedback as they write\, revise\, and polish their theses and dissertations;\nbegin sharing ideas\, successes\, and failures with instructional peers on practices for thesis and dissertation pedagogies;\nre-envision taken-for-granted assumptions and traditions of the supervisor-supervisee dyad to decolonize relationships in thesis and dissertation pedagogies and approaches; and\nstretch yourself toward embodying sustainable\, responsible\, and accountable thesis and dissertation pedagogy processes and practices.\n\nThis workshop is open both to new faculty and instructors as well as to seasoned supervisors and committee members to come together as we collectively work toward embodying and sustaining effective thesis and dissertation pedagogy processes at Yorkville and Toronto Film School.

SUMMARY:Fictional Classrooms: National Community of Practice (Summer 2026) – June 2026 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Fictional Classrooms: National Community of Practice (Summer 2026) – June 2026 Meeting\nDate: Monday\, June 22nd\, 2026 \nTime: 3:30-4:30pm (AT) / 2:30-3:30pm (ET) / 11:30am-12:30pm (PT) \nSign up to join! (you may be prompted to log in to your Google account) \nFictional Classrooms National Community of Practice Description:   \nOver the past four years\, our very own Matthew Dunleavy (CTEI Senior Educational Developer\, Faculty Excellence and Development) and his colleague\, Robin Sutherland-Harris (York University)\, have facilitated the Fictional Classrooms community. The current iteration brings together educational/curriculum/faculty/instructional developers and instructors from across Canada and the US to explore and reflect on narratives of education in films\, television\, short stories\, and novels. These works may speak to us as learners\, educators\, developers\, researchers\, artists\, and/or simply as humans.  \nFor Summer 2026\, the Fictional Classrooms community will be discussing Moo (1995) by Jane Smiley (novel):  \n\nPart One – June 22 \nParts Two and Three – July 20\nParts Four and Five – August 17\n\nThe synopsis: \nIn this darkly satirical send-up of academia and the Midwest\, we are introduced to Moo University\, a distinguished institution devoted to the study of agriculture. Amid cow pastures and waving fields of grain\, Moo’s campus churns with devious plots\, mischievous intrigue\, lusty liaisons\, and academic one-upmanship: Chairman X of the Horticulture Department harbors a secret fantasy to kill the dean; Mrs. Walker\, the provost’s right hand and campus information queen\, knows where all the bodies are buried; Timothy Monahan\, associate professor of English\, advocates eavesdropping for his creative writing assignments; and Bob Carlson\, a sophomore\, feeds and maintains his only friend: a hog named Earl Butz. \nYou can read about all these selections (and previous selections) in our what to read/watch list.  \nTo join the Fictional Classrooms Community for Summer 2026:  \nPlease sign up as follows:   \n\nVisit https://groups.google.com/search?q=FictionalClassroomsED (you may be prompted to log in to your Google account)\nOn the right-hand side\, click the small “Join” icon (next to the star) and ask to join group.\nMatthew and Robin will approve your request within 2 working days\, and you will then have access to the group\, including their shared Google Folder and Calendar. \n\nNote from Matthew and Robin: We approach the Fictional Classrooms program with a “read-what-you-can” mentality. We understand that we can get busy and may not finish readings each month\, but we encourage you to attend each session regardless of how much you have been able to engage with the text or film so we can still have fruitful conversations and build community.

SUMMARY:GenAI and Identity: Developing a Relational Model
DESCRIPTION:GenAI and Identity: Developing a Relational Model\nDate: Monday\, July 6th\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00-3:30pm (AT) / 1:00-2:30pm (ET) / 10:00-11:30am (PT) \nRegistration link \nWorkshop Description: \n\n\nConversations around GenAI use in the classroom\, in assessments\, and in instruction have often been distilled into two absolutist notions of good and evil\, missing opportunities to expand upon and embrace notions of impacts on identity and nuanced ways of imagining GenAI as a tool and cultural phenomenon. In an effort to surface nuance\, conflation\, and positive contradiction – in other words the human complexity of working with GenAI – this panel will be an opportunity for people to listen in on a conversation with educators from various backgrounds anchored by Indigenous scholars working through an identity exercise and reflecting on their own work with and around GenAI.

SUMMARY:Fictional Classrooms: National Community of Practice (Summer 2026) – July 2026 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Fictional Classrooms: National Community of Practice (Summer 2026) – July 2026 Meeting\nDate: Monday\, July 20th\, 2026 \nTime: 3:30-4:30pm (AT) / 2:30-3:30pm (ET) / 11:30am-12:30pm (PT) \nSign up to join!

SUMMARY:Intersection of Faculty Identity and AI Transparency
DESCRIPTION:Intersection of Faculty Identity and AI Transparency\nDate: Tuesday\, July 21st\, 2026 \nTime: 1:30-2:30pm (AT) / 12:30-1:30pm (ET) / 9:30-10:30am (PT) \nRegistration link \nWebinette Description: \n\n\nNatasha Hannon and Laura Kinderman present work in progress reflecting on the intersections of AI use transparency and faculty identity. We will examine both the developing policies around GenAI use for educators\, including those for disclosure statements and the potential unspoken costs or benefits as well as assumptions that accompany disclosure. The following questions will be addressed in the session: \n\nWe ask faculty to model AI transparency\, but what\, if any\, are the costs (or benefits) of this transparency?\nHow do conceptions of identity impact faculty members practices with respect to acknowledging AI use across domains of faculty practice (development of curriculum\, instructional planning and delivery\, provision of feedback)?\nHow do policies and faculty development initiatives promote or inhibit transparency in AI use among faculty?
