The current iteration brings together educational/curriculum/faculty/instructional developers and instructors from across Canada and the US to explore and reflect on narratives of education in films\, television\, short stories\, and novels. These works may speak to us as learners\, educators\, developers\, researchers\, artists\, and/or simply as humans.     \nFor Fall 2026\, the Fictional Classrooms community will be discussing:   \n\nRooster S01E03 – “White Whale” (2026) (TV show) – September 22nd\n\n\n“Distant” by Eduardo Halfón (trans. Lisa Dillman) (2008/2012) (short story) – October 26th   \n\n\nThe Man Who Knew Infinity (dir. Matt Brown) (2016) (film) – November 16th \n\n\nNever Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (2005) (novel) – December 14th\n\nYou can read about all these selections (and previous selections) in our what to read/watch list.   \n  \nTo join the Fictional Classrooms Community for Fall 2026:    \nPlease sign up as follows:    \n\n Visit https://groups.google.com/search?q=FictionalClassroomsED (you may be prompted to log in to your Google account)  \n On the right-hand side\, click the small “Join” icon (next to the star) and ask to join group. \n Matthew and Robin will approve your request within 2 working days\, and you will then have access to the group\, including their shared Google Folder and Calendar.   \n\nNote from Matthew and Robin: We approach the Fictional Classrooms program with a “read-what-you-can” mentality. You are invited to bring a pre-existing or draft statement or just something to write/type/record on in case you are inspired!     \nThis introduction will be followed by time to ask questions as well as go over some activities (including some GenAI prompting) to help you explore your beliefs and values so that you can identify what you may wish to include in your own teaching philosophy statement.  \nNote: This workshop includes a 60-minute interactive workshop + a 30-minute optional (but encouraged) reflective conversation and Q&A.

But what if we could work differently? Editing Generously borrows from Kathleen Fitzpatrick’s books\, Generous Thinking and Leading Generously\, and Lee Skallerup Bessette\, PhD\, in this session\, will explain the concept and provide a roadmap to how to create your own publishing opportunities which are generative\, generous\, and focuses on community and support. Due to the pressures of modern academia\, we have forgotten that publishing is supposed to be a way to share and learn from our intellectual community. In this session\, we will explore ways to put that purpose back to the forefront.   \nSoTL Speaker’s Bio: \nLee Skallerup Bessette\, PhD\, is the Assistant Director for Digital Learning at the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) at Georgetown University. She is also the editor of The National Teaching and Learning Forum. Skallerup Bessette’s writing has appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education\, Inside HigherEd\, Diversity in Higher Education\, Women in Higher Education\, Hybrid Pedagogy\, and she has edited or co-edited four books and one special journal issue.
